Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers Calgary

In partnership with the Cookbook Company Cooks and Sunterra Market, Keynote we support the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter, The Doorway, and Awo Taan Healing Lodge through the monthly donation of over 500 servings of nurturing and delicious soups. Community members come together four times a month to support the shelters by making delicious soup that carries with it a message of concern.

The Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter was the first shelter in Western Canada for women fleeing family violence and abuse, and also the first shelter recipient of Soup Sisters in Canada. Through their leadership and support emerged our template for supporting shelters country wide and the appreciation for the value that a bowl of soup has to quietly contributing to the success of thousands of Calgarians on their journeys towards lives free of family violence. The Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter is one of the largest organizations in Canada for women, children, youth and men hurt by family violence.

The Doorway assists teens and young adults from the ages of 16-24 who have made the choice to transition from street culture into mainstream society. We offer delicious soup as a simple gift to nourish, warm and help fill the empty spaces in their lives, both physically and emotionally. It is our hope that the availability of a nurturing, fulfilling bowl of soup made by caring adults from their city will assist these deserving young people on the path toward believing in themselves and imagining new possibilities for their future.

The Awo Taan Healing Lodge provides services and programs to women and children from all cultures, who have suffered from family violence and all forms of abuse, in a uniquely Aboriginal atmosphere. Awo Taan is a 27-bed, full service emergency shelter dedicated to supporting the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual healing and well-being of women during their time of crisis. The shelter offers a full range of in-house crisis and outreach crisis, healing, and prevention programs. There is also a children’s program to ensure each child’s emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual healing and well-being are supported as well. Soup Sisters wholeheartedly embraces all women in crisis and takes pride in our multi cultural platform for showing we care and our message of support.
