Lethbridge Soup Sisters

The soups on in Lethbridge! Soup Sisters Lethridge launched April 13, 2015 in support of Blackfoot Family Lodge, YWCA Harbour House and Wood's Homes. The first batch of nearly 150 servings of soup was delivered fresh to Harbour House and lovingly prepared by the Lethbridge Inaugural Soup Sisters!

Soup Sisters is excited to announce our new culinary partners,Lethbridge Multicultural Centre - Home of the Southern Alberta Ethnic Association and Chef Alejandro Davila, owner of BavaRua Events and Catering. Born and raised in Ecuador, Chef Alejandro Davila has always been fascinated by different cultures. He attended both the International Buenos Aires and Hotel School (IBHARS) and Gato Dumas Culinary School in Argentina. Alejandro immigrated to Canada in 2010. His passion for world traveling, cooking, cultures along with his expertise in event planning inspired him to open BavaRua Events and Catering in 2015. He is delighted to be the Lethbridge Soup Sisters culinary partner.

Blackfoot Family Lodge, previously knowns as the “Native Woman’s Transition Home was started back in 1994 by a group of concerned women that identified a gap in services for Aboriginal Women moving into the City of Lethbridge. Today they offer accommodation and resources to women in a cultural and compassionate manner.

Opened in 1981, YWCA Harbour House is a 24-bed crisis unit for women and children who are involved in abusive intimate partner relationships. Families are provided accommodations for a maximum of 21 days, with staff available for counselling and support 24 hours a day. On average, the shelter houses 600 women and children a year.

Wood's Homes Emergency Youth Shelter is an 8-bed facility that provides accommodations and crisis counselling to youth under the age of 18. Youth can stay at the shelter for a maximum of 15 consecutive days. Referral sources can be from anyone, including the youth, and are accepted on a 24-hour basis.

Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers charge a $55 participation fee per person to cover the expenses of ingredients for the soups, the venue, equipment, supervision, and a Chef or professional facilitator. This ensures that the finest ingredients possible are used every time for the soups we provide to women, children and youth. Events are social evenings with lively conversation, chopping, laughter and warm kitchen camaraderie that culminate in a simple, sit-down supper of soup, salad, bread and wine for all participants. Each event produces approximately 150-250 servings of fresh soup that sustains your local shelter with nourishing and nurturing soup each month.
