Ottawa Grounded Kitchen - Soup Sisters
Thanks to the tremendous interest in the first Ottawa Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers chapter, a second satellite chapter launched October 28, 2013. With the generous support of the good people at Grounded Kitchen and Coffeehouse,we'll be making and delivering delicious soups in support of the young men's and young women's shelters operated by Youth Services Bureau Ottawa (YSB).
Under the guidance of Chef Gabriel Pollock we are looking forward to monthly soup-making sessions. Individuals and groups of up to 30 people are invited to book their evening with us. Make soup. Share conversations and a meal. Feel good. Helping others has never been so fun and so delicious.
YSB has an outstanding record of supporting young men and women in crisis and helping them get back on their feet. YSB'S success comes from working together with youth to help them see options they may not have considered, to believe in the power of choice. In doing so, they empower youth to accept responsibility for their decisions, trust in their full potential, and take steps towards fulfilling it. YSB is a non-profit agency that offers youth help to meet many of their immediate needs, including emergency shelters, transitional and long-term housing. Each month, YSB staff help 3000 youth and families in the areas of youth engagement, housing and homelessness, mental health, youth justice and employment.
Grounded Kitchen and Coffeehouse has been outfitted entirely with repurposed or reclaimed materials; its inventive decor creates a unique, warm atmosphere that feels like home. With its fully-equipped, spacious kitchen on one side of the premises and its cozy cafe full of interesting features on the other, it's an ideal location to make soup and break bread together. It's also located in close proximity to YSB's youth shelters, making for easy delivery of the hundreds of litres of fresh, wholesome soup that will be prepared each month.Soup Sisters and Broth Brothers charge a $55 participation fee per person to cover the expenses of ingredients for the soups, the venue, equipment, supervision, and a Chef or professional facilitator. This ensures that the finest ingredients possible are used every time for the soups we provide to women, children and youth. Events are social evenings with lively conversation, chopping, laughter and warm kitchen camaraderie that culminate in a simple, sit-down supper of soup, salad, bread and wine for all participants. Each event produces approximately 150-250 servings of fresh soup that sustains your local shelter with nourishing and nurturing soup each month.
