A Bowl of Soup, A Place of Care: Supporting Women Where They Are

There is something deeply comforting about a bowl of warm soup. It can offer nourishment on a difficult day, a moment of warmth during an uncertain time, or simply the feeling that someone cares. That's why we are proud to be a long-time partner of Soup Sisters:  because we, too, believe that food has the power to connect us, and that a bowl of soup can be so much more than a meal.

As Executive Director of Street Haven, I lead an organization that serves women experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges and unemployment. We offer housing, recovery treatment, therapy, training, and employment support. And, of course, food: nourishing, comforting, easy-to-serve meals for more than 130 women every day.

For women facing homelessness, housing instability, violence, poverty, or other difficult circumstances, access to nutritious food can make a meaningful difference. Soup, in particular, carries a significance that goes beyond its ingredients.

When we receive a Soup Sisters food donation at a shelter, supportive housing community, or treatment site, it carries a message: you matter, you are worthy of care, and your community has not forgotten you. At shelters and supportive housing sites, a warm meal can offer a sense of stability in an otherwise unpredictable day. For women receiving treatment or accessing supportive services, it can be one small source of comfort while they focus on healing and moving forward.

We know that soup cannot solve the complex challenges women may be facing — that's where Street Haven comes in, providing shelter, counselling, treatment, and opportunities to rebuild their lives. But what the soup from Soup Sisters offers is something just as important: a moment of connection. Sometimes care looks like a warm bowl placed in front of you. Sometimes it means knowing that people you may never meet took the time to prepare something especially for you. And sometimes that simple act of kindness is enough to help someone feel seen.

Everyone deserves a warm meal. And everyone deserves to know that someone cares.
