We recently had one of those moments that fills your cup in every way. It was a gratitude experience like no other—serving "hugs in a bowl" to some of our community's most vulnerable.
There's this amazing group called My Friend Dave, led by the incredible Jenn, who gathers people who are living rough or getting by with low to no income. Every Monday, she creates a safe space for people to come together, share resources, grab a snack, maybe get a haircut, and just feel cared for. This week, Soup Sisters was invited to join them, bringing the ultimate comfort food—soup.
Now, soup might sound simple, but sharing it? That’s where the magic happens. Every person there has a story, and gathering over a bowl of something warm and nourishing sparked so many genuine conversations. The gratitude was palpable, and there was this beautiful feeling of inclusion just from sharing a hot meal together. It reminded me that sometimes, the most powerful gesture is simply offering good food—something everyone deserves, no questions asked.
We’re so lucky to be able to see the direct impact of what we do. For many of us, giving can feel a bit distant; we don’t always get to see the smiles, hear the laughter, or feel the gratitude in person. But on that day, we did. Our soups were more than just a meal—they were an invitation to feel connected, to feel seen.
“If someone takes the time to give you something as meaningful as a cup of soup, that means everything to us. It really does. Thank you.” Jane
This gathering came right after a corporate soup-making event, where 14 generous people from the community rolled up their sleeves and got to work, making batches of quality soup with so much care. They didn’t just make soup—they made a difference. They knew that what they were creating would nourish bodies and souls in their own neighborhoods.
The statistics are sobering: 1 in 4 Albertans are struggling with food security, and food bank usage has jumped by 200%. But beyond the numbers are real faces, real stories, real people. We can help, one "hug in a bowl" at a time.
So here’s an ask to you: if this story moves you, please consider supporting Soup Sisters. Your donation helps us keep bringing that warmth, that comfort, and that sense of belonging to those who need it most. Let's keep filling bowls with hope and love, one spoonful at a time.
